Maurice Myers is a na’ve of North Carolina, born in Durham and raised in Mt. Gilead. Growing up in a small southern town, his first introduc’on to jazz was from watching the Cosby Show as Bill Cosby regularly had jazz greats such as BeTy Carter, Dizzy Gillespie and Joe Williams make guest appearances on his show. Raised in the Bap’st church, Myers first began singing in the youth choir, where his grandmother was the church pianist. He began taking piano lessons at an early age, following in the footsteps of his older sister, only to quit later as he began to pick things up aurally. Throughout grade school he con’nued to par’cipate in school choirs. Upon his entrance at Mars Hill College in 1996, Myers joined the college choir, the Harambee Gospel Choir and was a member of a smaller a cappella group. A\er transferring and gradua’ng from East Carolina University, he con’nued forming vocals groups and began wri’ng and arranging songs. In 2010 Myers began his journey as a student in the North Carolina Central University music department, where he studied music industry before seTling into the jazz studies program with a concentra’on in vocal performance. He earned placement in the top vocal small ensemble, Resolu’on, and is a member of the 16-voice NCCU Vocal Jazz Ensemble. He has performed with many guest ar’sts during his matricula’on at NCCU, including Cyrus Chestnut, Branford Marsalis and Wallace Roney, and was a featured soloist for First Lady Michelle Obama on her 2012 visit. He earned his Bachelor of Music, Jazz Studies in 2014 with honors, and now Myers is currently a graduate student in the Jazz studies program at North Carolina Central University studying toward a Master of Music, Jazz Composi’on and Arranging. He currently volunteers in the music ministry at Showers of Blessing Community Church in Garner, NC where he and his lovely wife of five years aTend. Jazz Jam – International Jazz Day April 30
Ti Harmon, an American vocalist, songwriter, and voice instructor originally from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, combines jazz, soul, and folk to create original music that transports her audiences to a unique world of sound and emo’on. She began singing at age five, and began working as a vocalist in Madrid, Spain a\er finishing her studies at New York University. In Spain, Ti performed in various groups, recorded for television series, as well as other commercial projects, and taught students of all ages.
At the comple’on of her s’nt in Madrid, Ti sought a more interna’onal context for her vocal expression. She moved to Paris, FR and formed the Ti Harmon Project and con’nued teaching. The group debuted at the Frontenay Jazz Fes’val in Frontenay, FR in 2009. In 2010, she recorded her first album en’tled “Somewhere Between,” and the final product was an electric LP
spanning many musical genres. The album features special guests Kirk Lighstey, Tom McClung and Michel Benita. In 2011 her project won the “Priz de Public” at the Crest Jazz Fes’val in Crest, FR.
In 2012 Ti recorded her second album, “Story to Tell”, with Blang Music, an independent French label. The “country-jazz” album consists of innova’ve arrangements of country songs, work songs, and original composi’ons. The album was recorded with pianist Tom McClung, guitarist Manu Codjia, bassist Michel Benita, and drummer Seb Rochford. Ti has toured and taught in Asia and Europe and is currently comple’ng her Masters of Jazz Studies at North Carolina Central University in Durham, NC. Jazz Jam – International Jazz Day April 30
Marvin E. Thorne, Jr.
Na’ve North Carolina musician, Marvin Thorne Jr., was born October 21,1989 in small town of Rocky Mount, North Carolina. Thorne was the younger of two siblings born into this musical family and quickly became very acquainted with the world of music. Thorne first found his passion and love for music by singing in his local church choir. Early in his career, Thorne became one of the youngest youth directors to direct. As a young director, Thorne created many of the musical arrangements for the choir including both vocal and musical arrangements.
While in high-school, Thorne excelled as a leader for The Marching Bulldogs, the school’s marching band, and became the head drum major leading the team to many first place trophies. In addi’on to performing with the Marching Bulldogs, Thorne also performed with the Nash Central High Jazz Band. It was there in Thorne’s junior year of high- school while playing trombone that Thorne developed a heart for jazz. Thorne has been noted to speak of the swing style of jazz as a natural catalyst for his deeply rooted passion for the genre.
Upon gradua’ng from high school, Thorne called Greenville, North Carolina his home as he furthered his career in music at East Carolina University. In May 2013, Thorne graduated with honors and earned his Bachelors of Arts in Music Performance from the illustrious university. While aTending East Carolina, Thorne held various ‘tles including ECU Vocal Jazz Ensemble Assistant Director, ECU Jazz Ensemble Assistant Director, Member and Drum Major for the ECU Marching Pirates, Founder and Music Director of ECU N-tune, an acapella vocal ensemble. In spring of 2009, Thorne became a member of the Zeta Psi Chapter of Phi Mu Alpha Music Fraternity.
Thorne is currently matricula’ng toward a Master of Music, Jazz Performance at North Carolina Central University. He primarily performs with the NCCU Jazz Vocal Ensemble, but Thorne also performs shows at local night- clubs, weddings, and church events. Thorne plans to con’nuously devote himself to a life of music.
